Short answer: To avoid furniture scams in Kenya, buy from a seller you can verify: a real showroom you can visit, a Google Business Profile with genuine reviews, and a phone number that matches. Be wary of prices far below the market, pressure to pay quickly, and photos that appear on other sites. Pay through traceable channels and keep every receipt.

Most furniture sellers in Kenya are honest, hard-working businesses. But big purchases like a recliner set, a mahogany bed or a dining set are also attractive to people who sell things that do not exist. This guide explains the common tricks, how to check any furniture shop before you pay, and the simple habits that keep your money safe. Use it with any seller, including us.

Why furniture scams happen

Furniture is expensive, bought rarely, and often ordered online from a photo. A buyer in Kisumu or Mombasa may never visit the seller in Nairobi, and the piece arrives days later on a lorry. That gap between paying and receiving is where scams live. Social media makes it easy for anyone to post attractive photos, copy prices and create a page in an afternoon.

The good news is that a real business leaves a trail you can check: a place you can visit, a history of reviews, consistent contact details and staff who answer questions about the actual piece. A fake seller usually cannot provide these, and that is what you look for.

Warning signs of a fake seller

  • No physical address, or an address that does not exist. "We only deliver" or "our warehouse is closed to the public" is a red flag for a large order.
  • Prices far below everyone else. Solid timber and genuine leather cost money. A 6-seater leather recliner set offered at a fraction of normal prices is almost always bait.
  • Pressure to pay now. "Only one left", "offer ends tonight", or "pay to reserve before I sell to someone else".
  • Payment to a personal name that changes. The account name does not match the business name, or you are given a different number each time.
  • Photos with other shops' logos or backgrounds. Stolen photos often show another showroom, a foreign plug socket or a watermark.
  • Vague answers. The seller cannot tell you the material, the size or the colour options of the piece in the photo.
  • No calls, only text. The seller avoids phone or video calls.

One warning sign alone does not prove a scam. Several together should make you stop and check.

Warning signs at a glance

What you notice What it can mean What to do
No address you can visit The seller may not hold stock at all Ask for the showroom location and visit or ask for a live video call there
Price far below other shops Bait to get a quick payment Compare with two or three known shops for the same type of piece
"Pay today or lose it" Pressure to stop you checking Slow down; a genuine shop will still be there tomorrow
Account name differs from the business Money goes to an individual you cannot trace Ask why, and confirm the business details before paying
Same photo found on other sites Stolen pictures of someone else's stock Run a reverse image search and ask for a fresh photo or video
No reviews, or only very new ones A page created recently Look for older Google reviews with photos and real names

How to check a furniture shop

Visit if you can. A showroom visit is the strongest check there is. You see the stock, sit on the sofa, open the drawers and meet the people you are paying. If you live far away, ask a friend or relative in the area to visit for you.

Look up the Google Business Profile. Search the shop name on Google Maps. A real shop usually has a pin at a real building, photos of the premises, opening hours and reviews written over months or years. Read the low-star reviews too: how the business answered tells you a lot.

Check the details match. The phone number, address and business name should be the same on the website, the Google profile, Facebook, Instagram and the WhatsApp business account.

Ask for a live video call. A seller who has the piece can show it to you on a video call, turn it around, open the recliner and show the label or finish up close. Pre-recorded clips can be borrowed; a live call is much harder to fake.

Ask specific questions. For a recliner set, ask how many seats recline and whether it is leather or leather-look. For a bed, ask the size and the wood. Our recliner sofas and mahogany beds pages show the kind of detail a real seller can give.

Checking photos and prices

Stolen photos are the most common trick. On a phone, open Google Lens or Google Images and search with the picture. If the same photo appears on several unrelated pages, or on a foreign shop, ask the seller for a new photo of the piece with a handwritten note showing today's date and your name.

For prices, compare like with like. A full leather recliner set such as the 6-Seater Black Leather Recliner Sofa Set at KSh 245,000 is a large purchase in any shop.

A solid mahogany bed like the 6x6 Mahogany Bed – Sleigh Design at KSh 115,000 is priced for the timber and the work in it. If another seller offers "the same" piece for a small fraction of a fair price, the piece is either not the same or not real. Our Kenya furniture price guide shows typical price ranges by category so you have a reference point.

Safer ways to order and pay

  • Use traceable channels. Pay to a business account or till in the shop's registered name, or by card on the shop's own website checkout. Avoid sending money to personal numbers you cannot link to the business.
  • Get a written order. Ask for the product name, colour, size, price, delivery location and delivery cost in writing, on WhatsApp or by email, before you pay.
  • Keep every receipt. Save the payment message, the invoice and the chat. They are your record if anything goes wrong.
  • Avoid paying before you see the piece when the seller is unknown. If you must pay before seeing it, choose a seller you have verified with the checks above.
  • Ask how payment works before you commit. A genuine shop explains its payment steps clearly and does not change them halfway.

Online checkout on a shop's own website is another option where it exists. On our site, prices on every product page are live, and you can add pieces such as the Brown Leather Accent Chair to the cart like any online shop. For anything else about paying, ask us on WhatsApp and we will explain the options before you order.

On delivery day

Check the piece before the delivery team leaves. Compare the colour, size and finish with the photos and the written order. Open drawers, test reclining mechanisms and look for damage. Take photos of anything you are unsure about and raise it straight away. Our guide to measuring doors and stairs helps you avoid the other common delivery problem: a piece that does not fit through the door.

If you are ordering from outside Nairobi, read our guide to furniture delivery across Kenya. It explains what to agree before a piece travels to your town.

Frequently asked questions

What is the safest way to buy furniture online in Kenya?

Choose a seller you can verify: a real showroom, a Google Business Profile with genuine reviews and matching contact details. Get the order in writing, pay through a traceable channel in the business name, and keep every receipt.

How can I tell if furniture photos are stolen?

Search the photo with Google Lens or Google Images. If it appears on unrelated shops, ask the seller for a fresh photo or a live video call of the piece with something that shows today's date.

Is a very cheap price always a scam?

Not always. Clearance and genuine offers exist. But a price far below other shops for the same type of piece is a reason to slow down and check the seller carefully before you pay.

Can I visit the EmmyPes showroom before I buy?

Yes. The showroom is at Rubis Utawala, along the Eastern Bypass, Nairobi, open daily 8am to 8pm. You can see and try the pieces before you order.

How do I pay EmmyPes?

Ask us on WhatsApp and we will explain the payment options for your order before you commit. You can also add pieces to the cart and use the checkout on this website.

Not sure about a seller or a piece? Ask us on WhatsApp, or visit our showroom at Rubis Utawala, along the Eastern Bypass, Nairobi, open daily 8am to 8pm.
