Short answer: Choose a stand-hung egg chair if you cannot fix anything to the ceiling, a double egg chair if two people will share it, and keep cushions indoors when it rains. Measure the floor for the stand and leave room for the chair to swing before you buy.
Egg chairs are the seats people fight over: a woven, rounded basket you sink into with cushions all around. They suit balconies, verandas, gardens, living room corners and lodge terraces. This guide explains the types, how much space each needs, and what to check before you order.
Types of egg chair
- Stand-hung egg chairs hang from a curved frame on a base. Nothing is fixed to the ceiling, so you can move the chair between the balcony and the lounge.
- Ceiling-hung egg chairs hang from a hook in a beam or slab. They take less floor space but need a strong fixing.
- Floor-standing egg or pod chairs sit directly on the floor or on legs and do not swing.
Most of our egg chairs are woven synthetic rattan or wicker with thick cushions. Where a listing says the chair hangs from its own stand, as with the Brown Rattan Egg Chair with Grey Cushions (KSh 27,500) and the Brown Egg Chair – Cream Cushions (KSh 27,500), it can go anywhere with enough floor space. For other designs, ask us on WhatsApp whether the chair comes with a stand.

Hanging from a stand or the ceiling
For most Kenyan apartments and rental homes, a stand is the practical choice: there is no drilling, and landlords and building managers rarely allow heavy fixings in concrete slabs. A stand also lets you follow the shade through the day. Ceiling hanging suits a strong timber beam on a veranda or a purpose-built hook, and should be fixed by someone experienced.
Single or double
A single egg chair seats one adult comfortably with room to curl up. A double egg chair is wider and lets two people sit together, which makes it a favourite for couples, for children, and for lodge and Airbnb terraces. The Double Seater Hanging Egg Chair (KSh 65,000) hangs from its own sturdy frame and needs more floor space than a single.

Indoor, balcony or garden
Egg chairs work indoors as a reading corner beside a window, on covered balconies and verandas, and in gardens. For a balcony, check the floor depth, the door width and how much space the stand needs; our balcony furniture guide walks through a small balcony layout. In an open garden, place the chair where it gets afternoon shade, and bring cushions in at night when dew is heavy.
If you want a whole seating corner, a set saves choosing pieces one by one: the Brown Hanging Egg Chair + 2 Rattan Tub Chairs + Round Glass-Top Coffee Table (KSh 52,000) adds two tub chairs and a round glass-top coffee table.

Cushions and colours
Cushion colour changes the whole look. Bright yellow, orange or red cushions make the chair the focal point of a garden; grey, cream and white look calm indoors and on balconies. Darker baskets (black and dark brown) hide dust; white and beige baskets look light and fresh but show marks sooner. Examples from our range include the Beige Egg Chair (KSh 27,500), the Black Egg Chair - Red Cushions (KSh 27,500) and the Olive Green Wicker Egg Chair - White Checked Cushions (KSh 27,500).

Egg chair or swing chair?
People often use the two names for the same thing, but there is a difference in feel. An egg chair has a deep, enclosed basket that wraps around you, so it feels private and sheltered, which is ideal for reading or a quiet corner. A swing chair or swing bench is more open, often wider and more upright, and is better for sitting side by side and chatting. The Green Swing Chair (KSh 27,500) is a good example of the open style.
If you want somewhere to curl up alone, choose an egg chair. If two or three people will use it together in the evening, look at a double egg chair or a swing bench. Children usually love both; for them, check that the stand is stable and that there is soft ground or a rug underneath.

How much space you need
- Measure the base of the stand; it is usually wider than the basket.
- Leave a clear gap behind and to the sides so the chair can swing gently without touching a wall, railing or plant pot.
- Check the door, stairs and lift on the way in; our measuring guide shows how.
- For a double chair, allow noticeably more space than for a single.
Care
- Brush dust out of the weave and wipe it with a damp cloth.
- Bring cushions indoors when it rains and dry them in the shade.
- Check the hanging point and chain or hook every few months.
- Our rattan care guide has the full routine for coast and upcountry homes.

Frequently asked questions
Do egg chairs need to hang from the ceiling?
No. Many egg chairs hang from their own stand, so nothing is fixed to the ceiling. Check the listing or ask us on WhatsApp whether a given chair comes with a stand.
Can an egg chair stay outside?
The woven basket is made for outdoor use, but bring the cushions in when it rains and at night when dew is heavy, and keep the chair in shade when possible.
Is a double egg chair much bigger?
Yes. A double seats two and its frame takes more floor space than a single. Measure the area and leave room for it to swing.
Will an egg chair fit on my balcony?
Measure the balcony depth, the doorway and the stand base, then send the sizes on WhatsApp so we can check the chair fits.
Can I try an egg chair before buying?
Yes. Sit in one at our showroom at Rubis Utawala, along the Eastern Bypass, Nairobi, open daily 8am to 8pm.
