Short answer: For a private office in Kenya, choose a straight executive office desk if you meet visitors across the desk and keep files in a separate cabinet, and an L-shaped office desk if you work alone with a computer, printer and papers at once. Measure the room first, leave about a metre behind the desk for the chair, and match the chair and cabinet to the desk finish. Our executive and L-shaped desks start from KSh 42,500.
An executive office desk is the piece that sets the tone of a room. This guide covers how to choose between a straight and an L-shaped office desk, what size suits a private office, how to plan storage, and what an office desk costs in Kenya, using the desks in our office furniture collection as real examples.
Straight vs L-shaped office desks
The first decision is shape. Both work well; they suit different ways of working.
Choose a straight executive desk if
- You regularly meet clients, staff or members of a congregation across the desk.
- The room is narrow and the desk will sit in the middle, facing the door.
- You want a classic, formal look, with files kept in a cabinet behind you.
Choose an L-shaped office desk if
- You work mostly alone, with a computer, a printer and paperwork all in use.
- The room has a free corner that would otherwise be wasted.
- You want the screen on one side and a clear writing surface on the other.
An L-shaped desk can still face the door. The L-Shaped Executive Office Desk (KSh 58,500) is described with the long side facing visitors and the return holding the computer, so you get the executive look and the extra surface in one piece.

Desk sizes for a private office
Office desks in Kenya are usually described by width in metres. As a general guide, a straight desk of around 1.2 m suits a home study or a small office, while executive desks tend to run wider, often 1.6 m to 1.8 m, with room for a screen, files and a visitor's side of the desk. An L-shaped desk is measured along each arm, so check both lengths against your walls.
The desk itself is only part of the space you need. Plan for:
- Behind the desk: about a metre for the chair to roll back and for you to stand up comfortably.
- In front of the desk: room for one or two visitor chairs, plus a walkway to the door.
- Beside the desk: space for a cabinet or filing cabinet with doors and drawers fully open.
As a rough rule, a private office of about 3 m by 3 m takes a straight executive desk with two visitor chairs and one cabinet. A smaller room, such as a spare bedroom used as a home office, often works better with an L-shaped desk in the corner. For more on layout and lighting at home, read our home office desk setup guide.

Storage: drawers, cabinets and filing
Paper still matters in most Kenyan offices: contracts, receipts, title documents, school and church records. Decide where it will live before you choose the desk.
- Desk drawers are best for daily items: stationery, a notebook, a chequebook. Ask us which desks have drawers and whether they lock, since this varies by design.
- Side or back cabinets hold box files and reference documents. The Brown Executive Office Cabinet (KSh 45,000) and the Dark Brown Executive Office Cabinet (KSh 38,000) are made to sit with executive desks.
- Filing cabinets keep hanging files in order. The 4-Drawer Metal Filing Cabinet (KSh 24,000) stores a lot of paperwork on a small patch of floor.
Keep valuables and original documents in a safe rather than a desk drawer. Our office filing cabinets and storage guide explains what to store where, and the office cabinets and lockers collection shows the full range.

Choosing a finish
Finish affects how formal the office feels and how much cleaning it needs.
- Dark brown and mahogany tones look traditional and authoritative, and suit law firms, church offices and boardrooms. They show dust, so wipe them often.
- Medium brown is warm and hides everyday scuffs well.
- White and wood brightens rooms with small windows and suits modern offices with glass partitions.
Whatever the finish, use a desk mat and coasters, keep the desk out of strong direct sun, and wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth. If you want a desk in a finish or size we do not list, we can make it to order: see custom-made furniture in Nairobi.
Matching executive chairs and cabinets
A matched desk, chair and cabinet makes an office look planned rather than collected. Pick the desk first, then match the chair to it.
- With a brown desk, the Executive Brown Office Chair (KSh 38,000) or the Dark Brown Executive Office Chair (KSh 38,500) keeps the same warm tone.
- The Black Executive Office Chair (KSh 38,000) suits almost any desk and works well with dark or white finishes.
- For a modern office, the Grey Executive Chair (KSh 39,500) sits well with white and wood.
Check that the chair arms slide under the desk, and that the seat height lets your feet rest flat. Our office chair buying guide covers comfort, adjustment and materials. If you hold meetings in the office, the Dark Brown Executive Boardroom Table (KSh 55,000) pairs with dark executive desks. For a complete room plan, see our home office furniture page.

Reception desks and the front office
The reception desk is the first thing a visitor sees. It needs a tidy surface for a computer, phone and visitor book, and some storage so the front stays clear. The Receptionist Office Desk (KSh 34,500) is designed for offices, clinics and salons and includes storage space.
Place the reception desk facing the entrance, with room for a chair behind and a short queue in front. Add seating for people waiting, such as the 4-Seater Office Waiting Chair (KSh 34,000). If your team is growing, our office workstations seat two or four people in one compact unit.

Measuring and delivery
Executive desks and L-shaped desks are large. Before you order:
- Measure the room and mark where the door, window and sockets are.
- Measure the narrowest doorway, corridor and stair turn on the way to the office.
- Note the floor number and whether there is a lift.
- Send the measurements and a photo of the room on WhatsApp with the desk name.
Our guide to measuring doors and stairs shows how, and the furniture delivery across Kenya page explains how we quote delivery to your office or town.
