Colours include lime green, green, beige, azure blue, teal and maroon.

Cantilever vs centre-pole: what is the difference?

Garden parasols come in two main styles, and the difference is where the pole sits.

A centre-pole parasol has its pole in the middle of the canopy. It often goes through a hole in an outdoor table, so it shades the people sitting at that table. It is simple and suits dining sets.

A cantilever parasol has its pole to one side, with the canopy hanging over the space. Because nothing stands in the middle, the shade can fall over a row of sunbeds, a sofa set or a table without a pole getting in the way. Most of our garden parasols are cantilever umbrellas, and their product titles say so.

Two of our umbrellas, the Emerald Teal and the Executive Maroon, are listed as garden umbrellas without the word cantilever in the title. Check their product photos, or ask us on WhatsApp about the pole and base, before you decide where they will go.

Choosing a colour

Colour changes how a garden feels more than almost anything else, because a parasol is one of the largest surfaces in the space.

  • Beige blends with natural stone, timber decking and rattan furniture. It is the quietest choice and suits most homes.
  • Green and lime green sit naturally against lawns and planting. Lime green is bright and cheerful; deeper green is calmer.
  • Azure blue and teal pair well with pool water and white walls, which is why customers at the coast often like them.
  • Maroon is bold and formal. It works on a terrace or beside darker furniture where you want the umbrella to stand out.

Lighter canopies generally show less fading over time than very dark ones in strong sun, so if your space gets sun all day, a lighter shade is a practical choice.

Where to put a parasol

A few general guidelines help you get the most shade from any parasol:

  • Shade the people, not the pool. Place the canopy over the sunbeds, sofa or table where people actually sit.
  • Follow the sun. Think about where the afternoon sun comes from and set the canopy to cover that side of the seating.
  • Give the base a level, hard surface. Paving, tiles or decking keep a freestanding base steady.
  • Close it in strong wind and when not in use. A closed canopy lasts longer and is safer in gusty weather.
  • Rinse near the sea. At the coast, wipe the frame with fresh water every week or two to remove salt.

If you are pairing a parasol with loungers, read our guide to sunbeds and pool loungers in Kenya for spacing tips.

Before you buy: a quick checklist

Run through these questions before you choose a parasol. They save most buyers from picking the wrong type.

  • What will sit under it? A row of sunbeds or a sofa set suits a cantilever. A single dining table with a hole for a pole suits a centre-pole parasol.
  • How much ground space is there for the base? A freestanding base needs a clear, level spot beside the seating. Measure the area and send us the size if you are unsure.
  • Where does the afternoon sun come from? Stand in the space between 2pm and 4pm. That is usually when shade matters most.
  • Which colour suits the space? Match the canopy to your furniture and walls, or choose a lighter shade if the spot gets sun all day.
  • Is it for one parasol or several? Restaurants, rentals and large gardens often need more than one. Send the full list on WhatsApp for one quote.

Pairing a parasol with outdoor furniture

A parasol is rarely bought on its own. Most customers pair it with seating they already have or buy at the same time.

Over a pool deck, a cantilever umbrella sits beside a row of sunbeds and pool loungers and shades two or three of them at once. Over a patio, it covers a rattan outdoor sofa set so the space can be used through the afternoon. For dining, the Cantilever Garden Umbrella with 8 Seater Dining Set brings the shade and the table together for larger families.

If you are furnishing a whole outdoor space, list every piece you want in one message and we will help you check that the parasol fits the layout.
