Short answer: Pick the number of seats first, then check the space: a 2-seater needs a patch of about 2 m by 2 m, a 4-seater about 2.5 m by 2.5 m, a 6-seater about 3 m by 3.5 m and an 8-seater about 3.5 m by 4.5 m. Rattan is light and easy to move into shade; wood feels solid and suits restaurants and lodges. Our outdoor dining sets in Kenya start at KSh 24,500 for two and run to KSh 185,000 for twelve.

An outdoor dining set turns a lawn, terrace or rooftop into a place where people actually eat. Before you compare prices, it helps to know how many people you usually feed, how much clear floor you have, and whether the table will sit in full sun. This guide covers outdoor dining sets in Kenya for homes, rooftops, cafés and restaurants, using real sets from our outdoor furniture and wooden outdoor furniture collections.

Outdoor dining set sizes and the space each needs

A garden table and chairs always take more room than the table alone. Each chair needs space to be pulled back so someone can sit down and stand up, which is roughly 75 to 90 cm behind every seat. On grass or gravel, allow a little more, because chairs do not slide as easily as on tiles.

  • 2-seater: about 2 m by 2 m. Fits a balcony, a rooftop corner or a small café pavement spot.
  • 4-seater: about 2.5 m by 2.5 m. The most common size for a family patio or a modest terrace.
  • 5 or 6-seater: about 3 m by 3.5 m. Suits a family of five or six, or regular weekend guests.
  • 8-seater and larger: about 3.5 m by 4.5 m or more. For large gardens, villa terraces, lodges and restaurant patios.

Mark the area on the ground with string or masking tape and walk around it. Check that a door, a gate or a path is not blocked when every chair is pulled out. If you also want a parasol, add space for its base, which on a cantilever umbrella sits to one side of the table.

Round and hexagonal tables suit corners and square terraces; rectangular tables line up along a wall or a narrow terrace.

Rattan vs wood for garden tables and chairs

Most of our outdoor dining sets are rattan or wicker. Rattan is light, so you can carry chairs into the shade or under a roof when the weather turns, and the woven texture sits well beside plants. Some sets, such as the 6-Seater Black Rattan Outdoor Dining Set (KSh 98,500), are listed as synthetic rattan; the white wicker sets are described as PE or HDPE wicker. Check each product page for the exact material.

Wood feels heavier and more permanent. The 6-Seater Hexagonal Wooden Outdoor Dining Set (KSh 68,000) has a slatted wooden top, slatted chairs on curved black metal frames, and a centre hole for a patio umbrella. Wood needs re-oiling or re-sealing once or twice a year, while rattan mostly needs dusting and a rinse.

  • Choose rattan if you move furniture often, want cushions, or like a soft, relaxed look.
  • Choose wood if you want a set that stays put, suits a restaurant or lodge garden, and looks natural on grass.

Our guide to outdoor sofas vs wooden outdoor furniture goes deeper into the trade-offs.

High (bar-height) vs standard tables

Standard-height dining sets are best for proper meals, children and older guests. High, bar-height sets suit drinks, snacks and guests who come and go. They work well along a terrace edge with a view, beside a braai, or in a hotel or rooftop bar.

We have the 4-Seater Rattan Outdoor High Dining Set (KSh 98,000) and the 6-Seater Rattan Outdoor High Dining Set (KSh 98,000). The standard-height 6-Seater Rattan Outdoor Dining Set (KSh 98,000) is the same price, so the choice is about how you use the space, not cost. High seats need a level floor so they stay steady. If you want bar-height seating indoors, see our bar stools guide.

Shade: parasols and covered terraces

A table in full sun at lunchtime is empty at lunchtime. If your set will not sit under a roof or a tree, plan a parasol at the same time. A centre-pole parasol goes through a table with an umbrella hole, like the hexagonal wooden set. A cantilever umbrella stands to one side, so the whole table is shaded with no pole in the way, which suits larger rattan sets.

Browse our garden parasols; the Oasis Beige Cantilever Umbrella is KSh 125,000. Our cantilever parasol guide explains sizes and bases.

Cushions and care in Kenyan sun and rain

Outdoor furniture lasts longest when it is not left out in every storm. These general habits help:

  • Bring cushions in at night and when it rains. Stand damp cushions on their edge in the shade so they dry right through before storing.
  • Brush the weave to remove dust and leaves, then wipe with a damp cloth. Now and then, wash with mild soapy water and rinse.
  • Wipe spills off table tops straight away, especially on glass and wood.
  • Cover the set or move it under a roof during long rainy spells or when you travel.
  • Lift chairs rather than dragging them, and put pads under the feet on tiles.
  • Re-oil wooden slats once or twice a year and let wood dry in the air after rain.

Our rattan outdoor furniture care guide has a full routine.

Coast vs highlands

At the coast, in Mombasa, Malindi, Diani and Kilifi, salty, humid air settles on everything. Rinse rattan and metal frames with fresh water every few weeks and dry cushions well, because damp foam in humid air stays damp. Pale colours keep a terrace looking cool, and a parasol matters more in strong coastal sun. See our furniture in Mombasa page.

In the highlands, around Nairobi, Nakuru, Naivasha and Eldoret, the challenges are dust in the dry months and heavy rain in the long and short rains. Grey and dark finishes hide dust well; covers or a covered veranda help through the rainy seasons.

Measuring and delivery

Before you order, measure the floor where the set will stand and the route it takes to get there: the gate, any narrow side passage, the stairs and the door onto a rooftop or balcony. Large tables can be awkward on tight stairs. Our guide to measuring doors and stairs before delivery shows what to check. Send the measurements and your location on WhatsApp and we will quote delivery; the furniture delivery across Kenya page explains how it works. For the full range of outdoor pieces, see our garden and patio furniture page.

Frequently asked questions

How much is an outdoor dining set in Kenya?

Our sets range from KSh 24,500 for a 2-seater brown rattan set to KSh 185,000 for a 12-seater white wicker set, with prices checked on 11 October 2026. Most 4-seaters cost between KSh 35,500 and KSh 78,000.

How much space does a 6-seater garden table and chairs need?

Allow about 3 m by 3.5 m so every chair can be pulled back and people can walk behind. Add more if you want a parasol base beside the table.

Can rattan dining sets stay outside in the rain?

Rattan is made for outdoor use, but it lasts longer if you bring cushions in when it rains and cover the set or move it under a roof during long rainy spells.

Is a high dining set comfortable for meals?

High sets suit drinks, snacks and short meals. For long family meals with children or older guests, a standard-height set is usually more comfortable.

Can I see the outdoor dining sets in person?

Yes. Visit our showroom at Rubis Utawala, along the Eastern Bypass, Nairobi, open every day from 8am to 8pm.
