Short answer: The best home safe is one that fits what you need to store, is heavy enough or bolted down so it cannot be carried away, and sits in a spot that is hard to find. For papers and some cash, a 45 kg safe suits most homes; for a family business or larger valuables, look at 60 to 90 kg.

A safe is one of the few pieces of furniture you hope never to need. When you do need it, during a break-in or a house fire, the choices you made when buying matter. This guide helps you choose a safe for your home. If you are comparing prices across the range, our fireproof safe prices guide lists every model side by side; this guide focuses on how to choose and where to place it.

Start with what you will store

Write a short list before you shop. Most Kenyan households keep a mix of the following:

  • Documents: title deeds, logbooks, birth certificates, passports, academic certificates, insurance papers.
  • Cash: school fees, business takings, emergency money.
  • Valuables: jewellery, watches, spare keys, small electronics and backup drives.

Documents need a flat shelf large enough for A4 folders without folding. Cash and jewellery need less space but more security. If several people need access, think about who holds the key or code.

Size and weight

Weight is the simplest way to compare safes, and it does two jobs. A heavier safe is harder for a thief to carry away, and a heavier body generally means thicker walls. The trade-off is that a heavy safe needs a solid floor and a clear route to its final position.

At the lighter end, the 45kg Fireproof safe suits a bedroom wardrobe or a study, where it can be tucked away out of sight. In the middle, the 60kg White and Brown Fireproof Safe is described as having a fire-resistant steel body and a sturdy locking mechanism, finished in white and brown so it does not look out of place in a room.

For the most weight, the 90 Kgs Brown Fireproof safe is described as a heavy-duty, tamper-resistant build. It suits a home business, a shop back room or a family that keeps more at home. See every model in our home and office safes collection.

Which safe for which use

Use Suggested weight Example Price
Documents and some cash in a flat or bedsitter 45 kg 45kg Black Fireproof Safe KSh 23,000
Family home: documents, cash and jewellery 60 kg 60kg White and Brown Fireproof Safe KSh 30,000
Home study or small office 70 kg 70kgs Black Fireproof safe KSh 48,600
Home business or shop back room 90 kg 90 Kgs Brown Fireproof safe KSh 45,000

These are starting points. If your documents fill several box files, go up a size so there is room to add papers over the years.

Fire resistance

All the safes in our range are listed as fireproof, and the product descriptions refer to fire-resistant steel construction. Fire protection for a safe is about keeping the inside cool enough for paper to survive for a period, so placement still matters: a safe on a ground floor, away from the kitchen, gas cylinders and fuel stores, faces less heat in a fire.

If you need a specific fire rating, for example for a business insurance policy, ask us on WhatsApp for the details of the exact model before you order. Keep backup drives and passports in sealed plastic pouches inside the safe as an extra layer against smoke and water used to fight a fire.

Lock types

Home safes in Kenya generally use one of three lock types, sometimes in combination:

  • Key locks: simple and reliable, but the key must be hidden well. Never keep it in the same room as the safe.
  • Combination dials: no key to lose; the code must be remembered or stored safely somewhere else.
  • Digital keypads: quick to open and easy to change the code, but they use batteries, so check them regularly.

Ask which lock the safe you are considering uses, and choose what suits the people who will open it. A safe that is too awkward to use often ends up left unlocked.

Where to put a safe at home

  • Out of sight: inside a fitted wardrobe, a store room or under a desk, not facing a window or the main door.
  • Not the master bedroom by default: it is the first room burglars search. A spare bedroom, study or store can be a better choice.
  • On a solid floor: a concrete ground floor is ideal for heavier models. Upstairs, check the floor and the staircase first.
  • Dry: avoid outside walls that get damp in the rains and rooms near bathrooms.
  • Accessible for you: you should be able to open it without moving furniture every time.

Bolting down and moving in

A safe that is fixed to the floor or a wall is far harder to remove. Ask whether the model you choose has fixing holes, and use a fundi with the right anchor bolts for concrete. Bolting is especially worth it for lighter safes.

Plan the route in before delivery. Measure doors, corridors and stairs, and remember that a 90 kg safe needs several people and care on steps. Our guide to measuring doors and stairs walks you through it. For offices, our filing cabinets and office storage guide covers the cabinets that sit alongside a safe.

Habits that keep a safe useful

  • Keep a list of what is inside, stored somewhere else (or as a photo in cloud storage).
  • Store copies of key documents outside the safe too.
  • Change the code when staff or tenants change.
  • Tell one trusted person how to access the safe in an emergency.
  • Check keypad batteries every few months.

Frequently asked questions

What size safe do I need for home?

For documents and some cash, a 45 kg safe suits most homes. Choose 60 kg or more if you also keep jewellery, more cash or many box files, or if the safe cannot be bolted down.

Are your safes fireproof?

All the safes in our range are listed as fireproof, with fire-resistant steel construction. If you need a specific fire rating for insurance, ask us on WhatsApp about the exact model.

Where should I hide a safe at home?

Somewhere out of sight on a solid floor: inside a fitted wardrobe, a store room or a study, away from windows and the main door, and not always in the master bedroom.

Should I bolt my safe to the floor?

Yes, if the model has fixing holes. A bolted safe is much harder to carry away, which matters most for lighter safes.

Can I see the safes before buying?

Yes. Visit our showroom at Rubis Utawala, along the Eastern Bypass, Nairobi, open daily 8am to 8pm.
