Short answer: Dust and vacuum a recliner every week, blot spills at once, use only cleaners that suit the upholstery, keep it out of strong direct sun, and open and close it with the handle or button rather than by force. Leave space behind it to recline, and keep objects and small children clear of the mechanism.

Know your recliner

A recliner is a sofa with moving parts, so it needs a little more care than an ordinary sofa. Before cleaning, check three things: whether it is manual (a handle or lever) or electric (buttons and a power cable), what the upholstery is, and what the care label or product details say.

Our range includes leather sets such as the 6-seater Beige Leather Recliner Seats (KSh 175,000), fabric sets such as the 6 Seater Light Brown Reclining Sofa (KSh 213,000) in a suede-textured fabric, and electric chairs such as the Grey Fabric Electric Recliner Chair (KSh 75,000). Each needs slightly different care.

Everyday cleaning

Dust and crumbs collect between cushions, under the seat and around the footrest. Once a week, dust the arms and backrest with a soft cloth and vacuum the gaps with an upholstery attachment. With the footrest open, check underneath for coins, toys and crumbs, then close it.

Deal with spills straight away. Blot with a clean cloth; do not rub, because rubbing spreads the liquid and pushes it deeper. Do not push dust or debris into the mechanism while you clean.

Caring for leather recliners

Wipe leather with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it. For deeper cleaning, use a cleaner made for leather and test it on a hidden area first. Avoid household detergents, bleach and strong chemicals, and do not soak the leather.

Leather can be conditioned occasionally with a product that suits it. Keep leather sets out of strong direct sun, which can fade and dry the surface, and away from heaters.

Examples in our range: the 1-seater White Leather Recliner Seat (KSh 43,000), the 3-seater Brown Leather Recliner Seat (KSh 89,500) and the 6-seater Black Leather Recliner Seats (KSh 245,000).

Caring for fabric recliners

Vacuum fabric regularly, moving slowly over seams. Blot spills quickly and use only a cleaner that suits the fabric, tested on a hidden spot. Do not assume removable covers are machine washable; check the care label or ask the seller.

The 7 Seater L-shaped Brown Reclining Sofa (KSh 270,000) has a faux-suede finish and the 6 Seater Light Brown Reclining Sofa (KSh 213,000) a suede-textured fabric. For textured fabrics, a soft brush helps lift dust before vacuuming.

Looking after the reclining mechanism

  • Open and close the recliner with its handle, lever or buttons. Do not push the backrest or footrest by force.
  • Do not sit or stand on the open footrest, and do not let children climb on it or play underneath.
  • Before closing, check that nothing is under the footrest or between the moving parts: toys, phones, remote controls or pets.
  • If the mechanism feels stiff, makes a new noise or will not close, stop using that seat and ask the seller. Forcing it can make the problem worse.
  • For electric recliners, keep the cable where it will not be trapped by the moving parts, and switch off at the socket before cleaning around the motor area.

Cushions, seams and stitching

Recliners are sat in more than most sofas, so cushions and seams take the strain. Plump and turn loose cushions every week so they wear evenly. Check seams and stitching when you clean; a loose thread caught early is easier to fix than an open seam.

Avoid sitting on the arms or the edge of an open footrest, which puts weight where the frame and mechanism are not designed to carry it. Sharp objects in back pockets, buckles and pet claws can scratch leather and snag fabric, so a throw or blanket over the favourite seat is a simple protection.

Children, pets and busy homes

Recliners are popular with families because everyone gets a comfortable seat. Teach children to use the handle or button rather than pushing the footrest, and not to play underneath an open seat. Keep pets off the mechanism area and check under the footrest before closing it.

In busy homes, a weekly five-minute routine of dusting, vacuuming the gaps and checking under each footrest keeps a set clean and working smoothly. Deal with spills the same day so they do not dry into the upholstery.

Where to place a recliner

Leave a gap behind or in front of each recliner so it can open fully without hitting the wall. Check the product details for the space needed, or ask us. Electric recliners need a power socket within reach of the cable.

Keep recliners out of strong afternoon sun and away from heaters and cookers. A rug under the set protects the floor and keeps the footrest from scraping tiles.
