Recliner Sofa Sizes and Room Fit: How Much Space Does a Recliner Need?

Short answer: Recliner sofa sizes run from single chairs to 7-seater sets. Whatever the size, a recliner needs more room than a fixed sofa: clearance behind for the back to tip, clear floor in front for the footrest, and a walkway past the footrests when they are open. Measure the room, the door and the stairs, and for electric models, plan a power point.

Recliner sofa sizes at a glance

Recliner sofa sizes are described by seats, not centimetres, and the exact measurements vary from model to model. What matters for your room is the footprint when every seat is fully reclined. How much space does a recliner need?

This is the question most buyers forget until delivery day. A recliner changes shape when you use it, so plan for three zones:

• Behind the back. Most standard recliners tip backwards as they open, so they cannot sit tight against a wall. As a general guide, leave a gap of roughly 30 cm behind, and check the exact model reclined, because some need more and some "wall-hugger" designs need less.
• In front for the footrest. The footrest swings out and up. Plan clear floor in front of each seat, usually around half a metre or more, with nothing in the way.
• A walkway past the footrests. If people walk between the sofa and the TV, add a path of about 80 cm beyond the open footrests.

The coffee table is the usual problem. Many families find a smaller table, side tables or a console works better than a large table in front of a recliner. If your heart is set on a large coffee table, keep it out of the footrest zone.

The easiest check is to recline the model fully at the showroom, measure from the wall position to the tip of the footrest, then mark that depth on your floor with masking tape.

Single, 2-seater and 3-seater recliners

A single recliner fits where a sofa will not: a bedroom corner, a reading spot by the window, or the end of an existing set. People often search for 6 seater recliner dimensions, but a six-seat set can be one straight run, three separate pieces or a corner, so the footprint varies a lot. As a rough guide, a 6-seater suits a medium to large living room facing a TV wall, and a 7-seater needs a long main wall or a large open-plan lounge.

Straight, three-piece or corner?

Straight sets

Best for rectangular lounges and TV rooms with one long wall. Everyone faces the same way, which is ideal for films and football.

Three-piece sets (3+2+1)

The 6-Seater Light Brown Reclining Sofa Set (KSh 213,000) comes as three pieces that each recline on their own. You can place them around a TV, along two walls or in a U, and separate pieces get through narrow doors and stairs more easily than one large unit.

Corner sets

Doors, stairs and delivery

Recliners are heavy because of the mechanism inside, and large sections can be awkward on stairs. Before you order:

1. Measure the gate, the main door, any corridor corners and the living room door.
2. Measure the narrowest point on the stairs and any tight landing turn.
3. Note the floor number and whether there is a lift that takes furniture.

Power points for electric recliners

An electric recliner moves at the press of a button, so it needs a socket nearby. The Grey Fabric Electric Recliner Chair (KSh 75,000) is a good example: place it near a power socket and leave space behind and in front for it to recline fully.

• Plan the sofa position around the socket, not the other way round, so the cable does not cross a walkway.
• Avoid long extension cables under rugs.
