The right size depends on how many people eat together every day and how much space you have. These are rough guides only; always measure your room and check the product dimensions.
- Clearance. As a rough guide, leave about 90 cm between the table edge and the wall or other furniture so chairs can pull out and people can walk behind them.
- Four seats. Suits a couple or small family, an apartment dining nook or a kitchen corner.
- Six seats. The most common choice for family homes. It fits a family of four or five with space for a guest.
- Eight seats. Suits large families and homes that host often. Make sure the room is long enough for the table plus clearance at each end.
If you often have visitors, size the table for the number who usually join you on weekends rather than the number at home on weekdays. An oval table is easier to walk around in a narrow room because it has no corners. A square table brings everyone closer together and suits a square room.

Chairs are where most of the difference in comfort and price comes from, so sit on a few before you decide.
- Padded or cushioned chairs are more comfortable for long meals and family gatherings.
- Carved, floral or patterned chair backs give a classic, formal look that suits a separate dining room.
- Simple wooden chairs are easy to wipe clean and keep the price lower, which helps in busy family homes.
- Finish. Dark mahogany finishes look formal and hide marks well, while lighter browns feel warmer and more casual.

Looking after a wooden dining set
A wooden dining set stays good-looking for longer with a few everyday habits. This is general care advice for wooden furniture:
- Wipe spills quickly with a soft, slightly damp cloth, then dry the surface.
- Use mats and coasters under hot dishes and cold glasses to avoid heat marks and water rings.
- Keep the table out of strong direct sun where you can, as long hours of sunlight through a window can fade the finish.
- Polish occasionally with a furniture polish suited to wood, following the product's instructions.
- Lift chairs rather than drag them to protect both the chair legs and your floor.
