Short answer: In Kenya, beds and mattresses are sold in feet. A 6x6 bed takes a mattress about 183 cm by 183 cm and suits a main bedroom of roughly 3.5 m by 3.5 m or more. A 5x6 bed takes about 152 cm by 183 cm and fits most standard bedrooms. A 4x6 suits one sleeper or a small guest room.

Kenyan bed sizes in feet and centimetres

Walk into any furniture shop or mattress dealer in Kenya and you will hear sizes in feet: "six by six", "five by six", "four by six". The first number is the width and the second is the length. Because almost every Kenyan mattress is six feet long, the width is what really changes from one size to the next.

Here is what those sizes mean in centimetres, which helps when you measure your room with a tape:

  • 6x6: about 183 cm wide and 183 cm long. Often called king size.
  • 5x6: about 152 cm wide and 183 cm long. Often called queen size.
  • 4.5x6: about 137 cm wide. A common double size from local mattress makers.
  • 4x6: about 122 cm wide. A small double, or a roomy single.
  • 3.5x6 and 3x6: about 107 cm and 91 cm wide. Single beds for children, students and staff quarters.

Remember that a bed frame is always larger than its mattress. A wooden frame adds the thickness of the side rails, and a headboard and footboard add length. A carved or sleigh design can add a good deal more than a plain slatted frame, so always check the frame size of the exact design you like, not just the mattress size.

How much room each size needs

A bed should leave space to walk around it, open the wardrobe and pull out any drawers. A good rule is to leave at least 60 cm, and ideally 75 cm, of clear floor on each side you use and at the foot of the bed. In a shared bedroom, both sides need that gap so neither person has to climb over the other.

Working from that rule, these are comfortable minimum room sizes:

  • 6x6 bed: a room of about 3.5 m by 3.5 m or larger. In a smaller room a 6x6 still fits, but you lose space for bedside tables or a chest.
  • 5x6 bed: a room of about 3 m by 3.2 m. This is the size most Nairobi apartment master bedrooms are planned around.
  • 4x6 bed: a room of about 2.6 m by 3 m. Good for second bedrooms and DSQs.

Doors matter too. Check which way the bedroom door swings, where the window sits and whether a wardrobe door will hit the bed when it opens. Mark the bed size on the floor with masking tape before you choose. It takes five minutes and saves a lot of regret.

Which size suits who

Choose 6x6 if

  • Two adults share the bed and one or both move a lot at night.
  • A small child sometimes ends up in the bed.
  • The bedroom is big enough to keep that 60 to 75 cm walkway on both sides.
  • The bed is meant to be the centrepiece of the room, as with the 6x6 mahogany sleigh bed (KSh 115,000).

Choose 5x6 if

  • Two adults share the bed but the room is a standard apartment bedroom.
  • You want space left over for two bedside tables and a chest of drawers.
  • It is a guest room that gets regular use.

Choose 4x6 if

  • One person sleeps in the bed, such as a teenager or a single adult.
  • It is a small second bedroom, a DSQ or a staff room.

If you are unsure between two sizes, the room usually decides for you. A smaller bed in a room with space to move feels better every day than a big bed squeezed against the walls.

Matching the mattress to the bed

Buy the mattress to match the bed, not the other way round. A mattress that is too small slides around and leaves a gap at the sides; one that is too big will not sit flat inside the frame.

  • Measure the inside of the frame, where the mattress sits, once the bed is delivered or from the exact model in the showroom.
  • Check the depth. A thick mattress on a bed with a high footboard can look fine; on a low platform frame it may sit higher than you expect.
  • Check what the bed includes. Read the product description, or ask us before you order, so you know whether a mattress is part of the set.

Upholstered platform beds, such as our Chester beds, have a solid base that supports the mattress without a box spring. Slatted mahogany frames need slats close enough together for the mattress you choose; ask the mattress seller what spacing they recommend.

Bed designs in each size

Most of our mahogany designs are 6x6, with a few 5x6 options. For a main bedroom, the turned-post design (KSh 115,000) and the carved heritage design (KSh 115,000) give a classic look. If storage is short, the drawer storage design (KSh 150,000) keeps linen inside the bed.

For 5x6, the solid mahogany 5x6 bed (KSh 85,000) is plain and strong, and the live-edge rustic design (KSh 89,000) shows the natural edge of the timber. The Sunrise Chester Bed (KSh 45,000) is listed in both 5x6 and 6x6.

Our mahogany bed price guide compares every design, and the Chesterfield bed guide covers the upholstered beds in more detail.

Measuring before you order

Ask us how the bed you choose is delivered. Even when a bed travels as a headboard, footboard and rails, every part still has to pass through the gate, the main door, the staircase and the bedroom door. Before you order:

  1. Measure the room: length, width and the position of the door, window and wardrobe.
  2. Measure the narrowest door and any tight turn on the stairs.
  3. Note the floor number and whether there is a lift.
  4. Send these with the product name on WhatsApp so we can check the fit and quote delivery to your estate or town.

Customers across the country order beds this way. If you are outside Nairobi, our furniture delivery across Kenya page explains how quotes work.

Frequently asked questions

Is 6x6 the same as king size in Kenya?

Yes. In Kenya a 6x6 bed or mattress, about 183 cm by 183 cm, is usually called king size, and 5x6, about 152 cm by 183 cm, is called queen size.

Will a 6x6 bed fit in a 3 m by 3 m room?

It will fit, but you will have little space to walk around it or add bedside tables. For a room that size, a 5x6 bed usually works better.

What is the difference between a 5x6 and a 4.5x6 mattress?

About 15 cm of width. A 5x6 mattress is about 152 cm wide and a 4.5x6 is about 137 cm. Always buy the mattress to fit the inside of your bed frame.

Do your beds come with a mattress?

Check the product description of the bed you like, or ask us on WhatsApp before you order, so you know exactly what is included.

Can I see the bed sizes in person?

Yes. Visit our showroom at Rubis Utawala, along the Eastern Bypass, Nairobi, open every day from 8am to 8pm, and bring your room measurements.

Send us your room size and we will suggest the bed that fits. Ask us on WhatsApp, or visit our showroom at Rubis Utawala, along the Eastern Bypass, Nairobi, open every day from 8am to 8pm.
