Short answer: A Chesterfield (Chester) bed has a padded, button-tufted fabric headboard on an upholstered platform base. At EmmyPes they cost from KSh 38,000 to KSh 125,000. Choose a striped or patterned fabric if the bed will see daily use, keep plain cream for calm rooms, and vacuum the tufting weekly to keep dust out.

What a Chester bed is

"Chester bed" is the name most Kenyan shops use for a Chesterfield-style upholstered bed. The headboard is padded and covered in fabric, with buttons pressed into it in a diamond grid. That button pattern, called tufting, is borrowed from the Chesterfield sofa. The base is usually a platform wrapped in the same fabric, so the whole bed looks soft and tailored rather than wooden.

Because the base is a solid platform, a Chester bed supports a mattress without a box spring. It also hides the floor under the bed, which some people like (less dust to see) and some do not (less space to store things).

Our Chester beds collection includes button-tufted designs, striped fabrics and one channel-panel bed with vertical padded sections instead of buttons.

Choosing the fabric and colour

The fabric decides how a Chester bed looks after two years, so think about who uses the room and how.

Plain cream and white

Cream makes a room feel bright and larger, and it sits well with white or beige bedside tables. It also shows marks sooner, so it suits adults-only bedrooms and guest rooms more than a room where children jump on the bed. The Cream Button Chester Bed (KSh 45,000) is a good example of the clean, buttoned look.

Stripes

A fine stripe hides small marks and everyday wear better than a plain colour. The cream, grey and orange striped beds give you the Chester shape with a fabric that forgives more.

Bold colours

A green or orange bed becomes the feature of the room. Keep the walls and curtains quiet around it, and repeat the colour once, in a cushion or a rug, so it feels planned.

Dust and sun

In dusty areas, a mid-tone fabric such as grey hides dust between cleans. Keep any fabric bed out of direct afternoon sun from a west window, because strong sun fades fabric over time; a curtain is enough.

Chester bed or mahogany bed?

Many buyers compare a Chester bed with a solid wood frame. The main differences:

  • Feel: a padded headboard is comfortable to sit up against to read. A wooden headboard is firmer; add pillows.
  • Look: Chester beds look soft and modern; mahogany beds look classic and formal.
  • Care: fabric needs vacuuming and spot cleaning; wood needs dusting and occasional polish.
  • Price: Chester beds start lower. The Creamy Striped Chester Bed (KSh 38,000) is the entry point, while the Solid Mahogany 5x6 Bed (KSh 85,000) starts the mahogany range.

There is also a middle way: the 6x6 mahogany bed with a scalloped upholstered headboard (KSh 98,000) combines a mahogany frame with a padded headboard. Our mahogany bed price guide covers the wooden options.

Which rooms suit a Chester bed

  • Apartment master bedrooms: the clean lines suit modern flats, and a platform base needs no extra frame.
  • Guest rooms and Airbnbs: a tufted headboard photographs well for listings. Striped fabrics stand up better to frequent guests. Our lodge, guest house and Airbnb guide has more on furnishing rental rooms.
  • Teen and young adult rooms: colours like green and orange suit a younger room.
  • Cooler highland homes: a padded headboard feels warmer to lean against on a cold evening than bare timber.

A Chester bed is less suited to a room where it will be pushed hard against a damp outside wall. Fabric next to a damp wall can develop mould spots, so leave a small gap and keep the room aired.

Check our bed size guide before you choose between a 5x6 and a 6x6.

Styling a Chester bed

  • Bedside tables: white or beige two-drawer tables, such as the Beige Gold-Handle Bedside Table (KSh 9,500), suit cream and grey beds.
  • Bedding: plain white or one solid colour lets the tufting stand out. Avoid busy prints on a striped bed.
  • Wall: a darker wall behind a cream bed makes the headboard stand out; a light wall behind a grey or green bed keeps the room bright.
  • Lighting: wall lights or bedside lamps make the button shadows look deeper and richer at night.

Cleaning and care

  1. Vacuum weekly with a brush attachment, working into the buttons and seams where dust settles.
  2. Blot spills straight away with a clean, dry cloth. Do not rub; rubbing pushes the stain into the fabric.
  3. Spot clean with a little mild soap in water on a cloth, test first on a hidden area, then dry with a clean cloth.
  4. Keep hair oils off the headboard by using a pillow behind your head when you sit up to read.
  5. Check the buttons now and then and gently press any loose ones back into place.

Frequently asked questions

Why is it called a Chester bed?

The name comes from the Chesterfield sofa, which has the same deep button tufting. In Kenya, shops usually shorten it to Chester bed.

How much does a Chester bed cost in Kenya?

At EmmyPes, Chester beds cost from KSh 38,000 to KSh 125,000, with most button and striped designs at KSh 42,000 to KSh 45,000. Prices were checked on 9 October 2026.

Do I need a box spring for a Chester bed?

No. Our Chester beds sit on a solid platform base that supports the mattress directly.

Is a fabric bed a good idea with children?

Yes, if you choose a striped or mid-tone fabric that hides marks, and vacuum and spot clean regularly. Plain cream suits adults-only rooms better.
