Short answer: As a rough guide, pick a coffee table about two-thirds the length of your sofa, roughly the height of the seat cushions, and leave 40 to 45 cm between table and sofa. Round and oval tables suit small rooms and homes with children; rectangular tables suit long sofas; nesting tables suit apartments.

Coffee table types at a glance

A coffee table does more work than most furniture: tea, homework, phones, remotes and the occasional plate of food. The table below compares the main types in our coffee tables range, with prices checked on 9 October 2026.

Getting the size right

Most coffee table mistakes are about size. A table that is too small looks lost in front of a big sofa; one that is too large blocks the way to the door. Use these rules of thumb:

  • Length: about two-thirds the length of the main sofa. A 3-seater usually pairs well with a medium rectangular or oval table; an L-shaped sofa often looks best with a round table near the corner.
  • Height: level with the sofa seat or a little lower, so you can reach a cup without leaning.
  • Gap: roughly 40 to 45 cm between the sofa and the table. Close enough to reach, wide enough for knees.
  • Walkways: keep about 80 cm free where people walk through the room.

With a recliner set, measure with the footrest open. The footrest needs clear space in front, so a smaller table or a nesting set you can slide aside works better. Product sizes are not listed on every page; ask us on WhatsApp for the exact measurements of any table.

Marble, wood or glass

Marble tops are the most popular style in our range. They look smart, feel cool and solid, and pair well with gold, black or white frames. Use coasters, because marble can mark from hot cups and acidic drinks such as juice. Examples include the Grey & Gold Lava Marble-Top Coffee Table and the Black Glossy Marble Coffee Table.

Wood is warm and hard-wearing, and matches mahogany beds, dining sets and wall units. The Pure Mahogany Coffee Table and the Modern Wooden Coffee Table suit a traditional room. See our mahogany care guide for looking after wood.

Glass keeps a small room feeling open because you can see through it. It shows fingerprints, so it suits adult homes more than busy family rooms.

Nesting tables for small rooms

Nesting tables are two or three tables that slide under each other. Keep them stacked most of the time, then pull them out when visitors arrive. They are ideal for one-bedroom apartments and bedsitters. Options include the White Grey Marble Round Nesting Tables Set of 2, the 2-Piece Wooden Nesting Round Coffee Table and the Dark Mahogany Nesting Side Tables Set of 3.

Tables with storage and matching TV stands

If remotes, chargers and magazines pile up, choose a table with a drawer or shelf, such as the White Gold Coffee Table with Drawers. For a coordinated TV wall, a coffee table and TV stand sold as a set saves matching colours yourself; see the White Walnut Two-Tone Coffee Table & TV Stand Set and the White Geometric Coffee Table & TV Stand Set. Many Nairobi apartments use this combination; see furniture for Nairobi homes.

Matching the table to your sofa

Think about the sofa first and the table second. A heavy, dark leather recliner set looks balanced with a solid table, such as dark marble or mahogany, rather than a thin glass top that looks lost beside it. A light fabric or white sofa suits a white or grey marble table with a slim gold or black frame. Wooden-frame sofas look natural with a wooden table in a similar tone. If you are mixing colours, repeat one of them: a gold frame on the table with gold cushions on the sofa, or a grey marble top with a grey rug. Our guide to leather and fabric sofas has more on choosing colours that last.

Care tips

  • Use coasters and placemats, especially on marble and wood.
  • Wipe spills at once with a soft, damp cloth and dry the surface.
  • Avoid strong cleaners and scouring pads on marble, glass and polished wood.
  • Lift the table to move it rather than dragging it, which protects the legs and your floor.
