Short answer: Start a living room layout with the focal point (usually the TV or a window), place the main sofa facing it, then add a coffee table, one or two chairs and storage. Keep walkways about 80 cm wide. In apartments, an L-shaped sofa in a corner saves space; in larger houses, a recliner set in a U-shape works well.

Five steps to plan any living room

  1. Find the focal point. In most Kenyan homes it is the TV wall. In a house with a view or a garden, it may be the window or the veranda door.
  2. Place the main sofa. Put the largest piece facing the focal point, usually against the longest solid wall.
  3. Add the coffee table. About 40 to 45 cm in front of the sofa, roughly two-thirds of the sofa's length. Our coffee table size guide explains shapes and sizes.
  4. Add extra seats. An accent chair or a single recliner at an angle, so people can talk without turning their heads.
  5. Keep paths clear. About 80 cm wherever people walk, especially between the door, the kitchen and the corridor.

Draw the room on paper or mark the outlines with masking tape before you buy. It is the cheapest way to avoid a sofa that blocks a door.

Layouts for apartments

Many Nairobi apartments have an open-plan lounge and dining area, a balcony door and a short TV wall. These layouts work well:

  • Corner L-shape: an L-shaped sofa in the corner facing the TV, with a round coffee table. The Grey L-Shaped 5-Seater Sofa (KSh 65,000) suits most two- and three-bedroom units.
  • Sofa plus chair: a straight 5-seater on the long wall and one accent chair near the balcony, such as the 5-Seater Blue Wooden Sofa (KSh 55,000) with the Grey Rope-Woven Round Accent Chair (KSh 38,000).
  • Divide with the sofa: in an open-plan room, let the back of the sofa face the dining table. It marks the lounge without a wall.

Nesting tables, a slim TV stand and wall shelves keep the floor clear. For more on space-saving pieces, see our guide on L-shaped vs 3+2+1 sofa sets.

Layouts for family houses

In a bungalow or maisonette the lounge is often larger and squarer, with room for more seats and a bigger table. Common layouts:

  • U-shape around the TV: a three-seater facing the TV, with a loveseat and a single on either side. A three-piece recliner set such as the 6 Seater Dark Brown Leather Reclining Sofa (KSh 196,000) is made for this.
  • Two zones: a TV zone with recliners and a quieter conversation corner with two leather chairs and a small table by the window.
  • Facing sofas: two sofas facing each other across a coffee table, with the TV on the end wall. This suits families who host visitors often.

Family homes in Kajiado, Kitengela and similar growing towns often have generous lounges; see furniture for homes in Kajiado and Kitengela.

Layouts for long, narrow rooms

Long, narrow lounges are common in townhouses and older flats. The trick is to break the length into zones instead of lining everything up along one wall. Put the main sofa on one long wall facing the TV, then use a second zone at the far end for a pair of chairs, a reading lamp or a small dining table. Avoid a large L-shaped sofa that cuts the room in half, and choose an oval or rectangular coffee table that follows the shape of the room. A rug under each zone helps the eye see two smaller, cosier spaces rather than one corridor.

Planning the TV wall

Sit where you will watch and check that the screen is roughly at eye level. Leave enough distance that you can see the whole screen without moving your head. Keep the TV wall away from a window that faces the afternoon sun, or plan curtains, because glare makes watching hard. A TV stand with storage, like the Brown and White TV Stand with Storage Cabinets (KSh 28,500), hides decoders, routers and cables. Plan power sockets before you place the sofa, especially if you choose an electric recliner.

Sofa and recliner combinations

Recliners are popular for TV rooms, but a whole room of recliners can feel heavy and needs a lot of depth. Combinations that work:

  • Recliner set only: best in a dedicated family room where everyone watches TV together.
  • Sofa plus one recliner: a fabric or wooden-frame sofa for visitors, with a single recliner for the person who watches most. The 1-seater Brown Leather Recliner Seat (KSh 58,500) fits beside most sofas.
  • Corner recliner: a corner sectional recliner, such as the 6-Seater Grey Recliner Sofa – Corner Sectional (KSh 198,000), uses an empty corner and leaves the centre open.

Remember that recliners need space behind and in front. Our guide to manual and electric recliners covers space and power points.

Rugs, light and finishing touches

A rug ties the seating together. Choose one large enough that at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on it. Use warm, layered light: a ceiling light for cleaning, plus a floor or table lamp for evenings. Curtains soften the room and protect upholstery from strong sun. Finally, repeat two or three colours across cushions, the rug and the coffee table so the room looks planned rather than collected.

Common layout mistakes

  • Pushing every piece against the walls, which leaves an empty middle and makes conversation hard.
  • Buying a sofa that fits the room but not the door, lift or staircase.
  • Blocking the route from the front door to the kitchen.
  • Placing a recliner where the footrest hits the coffee table.
  • Choosing a coffee table that is too small for a large sofa.

Frequently asked questions

How do I arrange furniture in a small living room?

Place the main sofa facing the TV or window, use an L-shaped sofa in a corner if you have one, choose a round or nesting coffee table, and keep about 80 cm free for walkways.

Where should the sofa go in an open-plan room?

Let the back of the sofa face the dining area. It separates the lounge without a wall and keeps the TV view clear.

How far should the sofa be from the TV?

Far enough to see the whole screen without turning your head, with the screen roughly at eye level when seated. Larger screens need more distance.

Can I mix a sofa with recliners?

Yes. A sofa for visitors plus one or two recliners for TV watching is a popular, flexible combination, as long as there is space for the footrests.

Can you help me plan my living room?

Yes. Send your room measurements and a photo on WhatsApp, or visit our showroom at Rubis Utawala, along the Eastern Bypass, Nairobi, open daily from 8am to 8pm.
