Short answer: A manual recliner opens with a lever or by leaning back, needs no electricity and has fewer parts to look after, so it suits most family sets. An electric recliner moves at the press of a button, which helps older relatives and anyone who finds levers hard, but it needs a power socket nearby and a plan for power cuts.
Manual vs electric at a glance
Every recliner has the same job: tip the back and lift the footrest so you can rest. The difference is what moves it. The table uses pieces from our recliner sofas range whose listings state the mechanism, with prices checked on 9 October 2026.
| Manual | Electric | |
|---|---|---|
| How it opens | Pull a lever or lean back | Press a button |
| Needs a socket | No | Yes, near the seat |
| During a power cut | Works as normal | May stay in its last position until power returns |
| Ease of use | Needs a little strength | Effortless |

How manual recliners work
Most family recliner sets in Kenya are manual. You pull a handle on the side, or in some designs press back against the backrest, and the footrest rises. To close it, you push the footrest down with your legs. There is no motor, no cable and nothing to plug in.
Three of our sets say clearly in their listings that the mechanism is manual:
- 6-Seater Light Brown Reclining Sofa Set (KSh 213,000): a 3-seater, a loveseat and a single, each reclining on its own, with a cup-holder console in the loveseat.
- 6 Seater Dark Brown Leather Reclining Sofa (KSh 196,000): the same three-piece layout in a dark brown leather-look finish.
- 7 Seater L-shaped Brown Reclining Sofa (KSh 270,000): an L-shape with manual reclining sections and two cup-holder consoles.
For other recliner sets, the listing may not say which mechanism is fitted. Ask us on WhatsApp and we will confirm before you order, or try the seats at the showroom.

How electric recliners work
An electric (power) recliner has a small motor under the seat. You press a button and the back and footrest move smoothly to where you want them, then stop. There is no lever to pull and no need to push the footrest down.
Our Grey Fabric Electric Recliner Chair (KSh 75,000) is a single seat in soft grey fabric with a one-touch button. It makes a good reading chair, a dedicated TV seat or a comfortable chair for a grandparent. Because it is a single piece, it also fits into a bedroom sitting area or a study.

Power points and power cuts
Before you choose electric, walk around the room:
- Is there a socket close to where the chair will stand? Avoid running a cable across a walkway, where people can trip over it.
- What happens in a power cut? An electric recliner needs power to move. If outages are common where you live, keep the chair upright when you are not using it, and consider whether a backup supply or inverter already covers that socket.
- Is the wiring safe? Use a proper socket, not an overloaded extension, and keep cables away from the moving frame.
A manual recliner avoids all of these questions, which is one reason it is still the usual choice for large family sets.
Space behind and in front
Whatever the mechanism, a recliner takes more room than an ordinary sofa. The footrest comes out at the front and the back tips towards the wall. Leave space behind the seat, check the footrest will not hit the coffee table, and measure the depth of the room when the seat is fully open. If space is tight, a corner sectional such as the 6-Seater Grey Recliner Sofa – Corner Sectional uses an empty corner well. Our guide to L-shaped and 3+2+1 sofa layouts explains how to plan the room.

How to test a recliner in the showroom
Sit in the seat for a few minutes, not a few seconds. Open and close it yourself, the way you would at home. Check that your head rests comfortably when the seat is open, that your feet reach the footrest, and that the lever or button is easy to find without looking. If two people will share a sofa, try it together so you know whether one person opening a seat disturbs the other.
Who each type suits
- Families with children: manual is simpler and has nothing for small fingers to press. Teach children not to sit or stand on an open footrest.
- Older relatives or anyone with sore knees or back: electric takes the effort out of opening and closing the seat.
- Home cinema or TV room: either works. Many people choose a manual set for the family and add one electric chair for the person who uses it most.
- Areas with frequent power cuts: manual, unless the socket is on backup power.
Looking after the mechanism
Open and close the seat gently, one person at a time, and do not let anyone sit on the open footrest. Keep coins, toys and phone chargers out of the gap under the seat, where they can jam the frame. For electric chairs, unplug before cleaning underneath. Frequently asked questions
Is a manual or electric recliner better?
For most family sets, manual is simpler: no socket, nothing to charge and it works during a power cut. Electric is better for anyone who finds levers hard, such as older relatives.
Does an electric recliner work during a power cut?
It needs electricity to move, so it may stay in its last position until power returns. Keep it upright when not in use if outages are common, or plug it into a backed-up socket.
Which of your recliners are electric?
The Grey Fabric Electric Recliner Chair is electric with a one-touch button. Several sets are listed as manual. If a listing does not state the mechanism, ask us on WhatsApp and we will confirm.
How much space does a recliner need?
More than a normal sofa. Leave space behind for the back to tip and in front for the footrest. Measure the room with the seat fully open in mind, and ask us for the exact depth of the model you like.
Can I try the reclining action before buying?
Yes. Visit our showroom at Rubis Utawala, along the Eastern Bypass, Nairobi, open daily from 8am to 8pm.
